Western Youths | The Meaning / by Michael Gribbin

Come my tan-faced children,

Follow well in order, get your weapons ready,
Have you your pistols? have you your sharp-edged axes?
Pioneers! O pioneers!

For we cannot tarry here,
We must march my darlings, we must bear the brunt of danger,
We the youthful sinewy races, all the rest on us depend,
Pioneers! O pioneers!

O you youths, Western youths,
So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship,
Plain I see you Western youths, see you tramping with the foremost,
Pioneers! O pioneers!

The above is an excerpt by one of America's greatest poets, Walt Whitman. Whitman was born in 1819 and was present during the western expansion of the United States. These themes were very evident in his poetic writings, and gave his works a timeless intrigue that is greatly pondered even today.

When contemplating the theme of our next clothing line, I wanted to convey a sense of adventure, recklessness, and exploration. I wanted our apparel to not just inspire action, but demand it. Because it is SO important for you to experience the world. And not through second-hand information, but YOU have to experience it. And I feel a lot of people get daunted with the task.

We are the decedents of the hard working men and women who founded our home. We have the same tools they used to build it, and even more opportunity. Western Youths is a term Whitman uses to describe those in his poem who are full of action. The ones who don't hesitate to brave the unknown, the ones who don't wait for life to find them.

We the youthful sinewy races, all the rest on us depend... this might be my favorite line. All the rest of humanity depends on us. The fate of the world rests in our palms.

We decide what happens next.

And so, that is what Western Youths is all about. Braving the wild and daring to be daring. Facing the unknown and conquering your fears.

Because clothing can only communicate so much, we created a video to help better communicate our proclamation. Over the course of a month, we shot and collected footage from our No Anchor friends and followed them on some of their day to day adventures. We wrote a poem exclusively for this video, and also even hand-made our own flag.

Take a look at the outcome below and let us know what you think! And remember, you were made for great things. Go out there and realize them.

If you were inspired by our work, consider purchasing something from our store. We're running low on almost everything. We hope to make more Western Youths apparel in the future, but our current designs are exclusive to this spring.
